Sorry my man, but your lack of knowledge is showing on this one. Swept hilt rapier is actually stronger than cup hilt in terms of durability and was designed to withstand heavier blows than the cup. So while cup hilt it designer to protect the hand against stabs, swept is actually designed to parry heavy cuts to the hand. Such as from sabers or arming swords. Second in any swept hilt rapier manual you never hold your hand straight forwards, but always at an angle so that the rings overlap. This is covered both by Early Destreza as well as Italian manuals. Also I don't know who the dude that you fenced with is, but he has no idea how to hold a swept hilt rapier

This can work with shields as well if you're fighting an unkilled opponent. Wrist and forearm shots could permanently mess up your hands without protection, a thrust to the torso without protective gear can scramble your guts and any shot at the unprotected head and neck has so many ways to mess you up, it's scary.
